High Five Club
This is a VERY exquisite and private club for the friends and fans of Monterey Zoo who visit often enough to score one of these unique photos with one of our animals. We call it a “High Five” photo, for obvious reasons although not all the animals have “five” to raise up… so we do make exceptions. It takes a little time, a lot of patience and sometimes a bit of luck but we know YOU CAN DO IT!
When you do, you’ll receive a special honorary and exclusive “Monterey Zoo High Five Club" Pin, a custom Monterey Zoo High Five Club Certificate of Achievement, your photo and credit on our Monterey Zoo High Five Club webpage, and a special gift from our Monterey Zoo Gift Shop. You’ll also be entitled to additional special discounts and activities in the future that will be offered to our High Five Club members ONLY!

Rules
But please know, THE RULES ARE STRICT and our judges are stricter!
-
Hand and paw must align almost perfectly in the photo or you’ll just have to try again…
-
Photos are to be emailed to photos@montereyzoo.org
-
There are NO age limits to join this club ~ in fact, it is a bit more difficult for adults to achieve this photo than it is for kids. Be sure to ask a keeper why…
-
Once enrolled in the club, a participant can not enroll again however we can swap out a photo if the club member gets a better one.

A Walk with the Rhinos
Those who have a pet dog or horse know how very much they enjoy the company and attention of their human caretakers. Southern White Rhinos are no different as they are very social animals deserving of as much social interaction and mental stimulation as we can provide in captivity. We invite you to join us as we provide just that every day. Enjoy a leisurely walk to our 5-acre rhino habitat accompanied by the Monterey Zoo keepers, our zebras, sometimes our water buffalo and of course, our rhinos. It’s a fun, safe, educational experience for the entire family.
Along the way, you’ll learn about the many things that make this iconic species so very special and deserving or your love, protection and support. You’ll learn about rhino conservation programs that you can contribute to, efforts that will assure the survival of rhinos in the future. You’ll also have an opportunity to meet one of our rhinos, hands-on, while being photographed doing so. It’s a win-win-win for all concerned while helping support our rhino program at Monterey Zoo. If you’re spending the night with us in our Safari B&B, we recommend you compliment this experience with our Buddy’s Bedtime Tour, where you’ll help put the rhinos to bed in the evening, yet another very unique opportunity.
We are open 7 days a week – including most holidays except: We are closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Children must be 7 years of age or older to participate in this tour. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE the rhinos will participate fully, they are in fact, “rhinos”… but we will do our best fulfill our obligation. All participating assume the same risk when signing up for this tour, there are no refunds if the rhinos are not as cooperative on all days. The terrain in the area of this tour is uneven and dirt, appropriate footwear is required.
For the health and comfort of the animals, strollers are not allowed on this experience and some mobility devices might not be accessible (but we do our best to assure those with disabilities can enjoy as much of this experience as possible.)

Crunch Time
Feeding time for our “Big Cats” is one of the most exciting activities at the zoo, even for our volunteers and trainers –and you can be a part of it! You will see first hand how instinctual behavior takes over, and why safety and training protocols are so critical. Crunch Time is fun, exciting and educational. Tour times are announced daily but generally they happen between 4:15 and 5:15 PM, lasting 30 to 45 minutes. It’s an awesome way to get close and to learn about the behaviors of these magnificent animals. This activity (as depicted) happens behind the scenes in our tiger’s secure night quarters, attached to their much larger daytime habitat.)

Buddy's Bedtime
Bedtime at the zoo is quite an event for all our animals but more so for some than others. Putting a rhino to bed is a bit more complicated than some might think as it means calling them in from the play yard, separating them from their favorite toys, friends (other rhinos, zebras and water buffalo) and reducing their space a bit for health and security reasons but for our rhinos, it also means “DINNER TIME” and a warm barn during the winter.
This tour starts at 5pm and although scheduled for 30-45 minutes, this tour lasts as long as our rhinos dictate, and we’re just fine with that. You’re invited to help. Learn about their history’s, diets, training and our state of the art rhino facilities while also learning a vital conservation message that could help save these very iconic/ threatened/endangered species from extinction.
